This week we are reading about the contrasting impact of the industrial revolution on the lives of women depending on their social class. Many in the lower classes had grueling work lives, yet perhaps more freedom within the relative anonymity of the slums (for example, church attendance fell off in many industrialized European countries during this period; and many single women in the cities had wage packets for the first time, even if they were expected to contribute to the family income); many in the upper middle classes might have had wealth, but usually had to conform strictly to sometimes suffocating societal rules about behavior and marriage and were expected to be consumed by household management duties and creating havens for their husbands. At the start of your paper, specify which image you are using and why and use that image to begin your reflection. As you write, consider and answer the following question:

• Explore the varying roles of women in 19th century Europe (not the United States) depending on their social status. Overall, which would you have rather been – an upper middle class ‘ angel in the house’ or a female worker in a cotton factory? Why? (There is no single ‘correct’ answer to this question – use the question to explore the advantages and disadvantages of each role)

 Demonstrates an understanding of the main features of industrial work for working class women and of the ideal of the ‘angel in the house’ for upper middle class women (3 points)
 Effectively explains opening image and uses textual examples to illustrate and support main points (2 points)
