DG 4: Please select your passage from the Pardoner’s Tale (pp. 271- 281)
This forum exercise is about “close reading.” Close reading means a reading practice in which you move from the small to the large, from the specific to the general. It begins in close attention to the text, and moves outward into context.
First, choose a passage from the day’s reading (passage = at least 4 lines of poetry, at least 4 lines of prose, no more than 10) which strikes you as particularly interesting, confusing, or noteworthy.
[Note you will need to click the button that says “Add a new topic” and give it a subject header]
Next, type out the passage at the top of your post, indicating page and line numbers at the end of the passage.
When quoting lines of poetry, you should show the line breaks. Like this:
Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote
And bathed every veyne in swich licour
Of which vertu engendred is the flour (lines 1-4)
Then write a fully formed paragraph of at least 250 words (not including your quoted passage) in which you explain why you have chosen this particular passage. You may focus on particular features of the language, genre, poetic form, imagery, sound, etc. Or you may wish to focus on the idea expressed in the passage and how it is related to the overall narrative and the themes of our course. Draw connections with other texts (both on and off the syllabus). Be specific. Make an argument. Link details in your passage to larger ideas in the text.
